What dry ice blasting is

Dry ice blasting is a form of non-abrasive cleaning that uses solid CO₂ pellets fired at high velocity from specialist cleaning equipment. On impact, the pellets sublimate - converting from solid directly to gas - and the rapid expansion separates contamination from the substrate. Because the CO₂ becomes a gas at point of contact, there is no residue to remove and no liquid to dry out.

In automotive cleaning, it works best in confined spaces and mechanically complex areas where steam or abrasive methods would cause secondary damage. The process is environmentally friendly compared to chemical stripping, which requires solvents and disposal of contaminated liquids.

What we use it for

The service covers all the main problem areas on any vehicle - modern cars, classic vehicles, restoration-project cars, vans and 4x4s. Classic car enthusiasts in particular find this the safest option for aged paintwork, brittle seals and period wiring looms.

Where dry ice works best

Engine bays

We clean engine bays where baked-on oil and grime have built up around looms, sensors and connectors - hard-to-reach areas where delicate components and mechanical assemblies make steam or water a risk. Dry ice reaches in without moisture or abrasion.

Underbody and chassis

Road salt and corrosion from UK roads accumulate on underbody surfaces. We lift failed coatings and road film, exposing the bare metal for inspection and corrosion protection work.

Wheel arches and suspension

Brake dust and grime build up in wheel arches and suspension components in a way that standard washing cannot shift. For wheel restoration work, we clean arch liners and surrounding metalwork without affecting nearby painted or anodised surfaces.

Underseal and old coatings

Failed or flaking underseal hides the metal beneath it and prevents effective retreatment. We strip old and degraded coatings from bodywork and chassis panels, reaching into hard-to-reach areas behind sills, exposing the surface for inspection and retreatment.

Why dry ice rather than steam or sandblasting

Where other methods cause problems

Steam cleaning and sandblasting both have their place. The problem arises when they are applied in areas where the method creates more damage than the contamination it is removing.

Water and steam driven into electrical connectors and ECUs leave moisture that can cause corrosion weeks after the clean - well after the vehicle has left the workshop. Looms and junction boxes are particularly vulnerable because moisture sits inside the insulation and wicks along the loom before it can evaporate. A clean engine bay that develops a fault three weeks later is not a result any owner wants.

Abrasive media - sand, glass bead and similar materials - pits alloy surfaces, embeds in body seams and panel joints, and takes sound metal along with the contamination it is removing. Recovering a surface that has been blasted with the wrong media frequently requires more work than the original contamination would have needed.

Dry ice blasting avoids both. The CO₂ pellets sublimate on impact and leave no residue in seams, connectors or wiring. There is no water to push into ECUs and no abrasive material making contact with the metal.

What dry ice blasting will not do

Knowing the limits

Before you book, it is worth knowing what the process will not fix - and what the right next step is when blasting alone is not enough.

The process removes contamination. It does not remove sound paint, and it will not take a damaged or faded panel back to a factory finish. Scratched, oxidised or clear-coat-failed paintwork needs paintwork restoration, not blasting.

It is not a rust cure. Blasting can clear contamination from around corroded areas - which gives a clearer picture of the extent of the damage - but the process does not treat or inhibit rust. It will not resolve structural corrosion. For metal that has pitted, delaminated or corroded through, the clean is preparation for what comes next, not a solution in itself.

Where the method works well is as the first stage in a clean-then-protect sequence. Once the contamination is off the surface, the car is in the right condition for corrosion protection, ceramic coating, or whichever of our restoration services the vehicle needs.

How jobs are priced

This is a new service, so we price each job on inspection rather than from a fixed rate. What you need sets the scope - a single area such as an engine bay or a set of wheel arches, through to a full underside stripped back and cleaned. After blasting, we can apply a protective coating to slow the return of road salt and corrosion, included as part of the work where you want it.

Arriving at the unit

All work is carried out at our unit at Old Mill Lane Industrial Estate, Mansfield Woodhouse. This is not a mobile service - vehicles come to us by appointment, and the work is done in a controlled environment at the unit. We are a family-run business established in 1999.

Most jobs take a full day and we ask you to leave the car with us. We take vehicles of any size - vans and 4x4s included - and our cleaning equipment handles them all.

Common questions

Is dry ice blasting safe for my car?

Yes, when used correctly. The process is a non-abrasive cleaning method - the pellets sublimate on contact rather than abrading the surface, so it exerts no mechanical wear on paint, seals or metalwork. It is gentler than steam or abrasive cleaning in areas where those methods would cause secondary damage.

Will it damage paint, seals or wiring?

The process does not damage sound paint, rubber seals or wiring when used correctly. Sublimation leaves no water or abrasive residue behind, which is why this method works well near looms, connectors and ECUs where steam cleaning creates a corrosion risk.

Does it remove rust?

No. The process removes contamination - oil, grime, road film, failed underseal - from around corroded areas, which allows the corrosion to be assessed more clearly. The rust itself is not treated or inhibited by blasting. Corrosion treatment, metal repair or retreatment follows the clean as a separate step.

Do I need to leave the car with you?

Yes. Most jobs take a full day and we ask you to leave the car with us. We will call when it is ready.

Do you offer a mobile service?

No. All work is carried out at our unit in Mansfield Woodhouse. We do not offer a mobile dry ice blasting service - the equipment is at our Old Mill Lane premises, and customers bring their vehicles to us by appointment.
